HAIR HISTORY
Although technically it's dead, hair is one of the most prominent,
symbolic aspects of human identity. It's one of the first things
you notice when you meet someone, very often indicating race, personality
and status.
The power of hair is undisputed. Just ask Samson! When you cut
it, hair simply grows back. Even after death, hair continues to
grow. It has a force of its own, fuelled by nutrients that flow
to its ends. No wonder many cultures hide their hair clippings to
prevent them falling into the hands of sorcerers.
Prized for its beauty, hair is sensual, political, cultural and
spiritual. Through the ages it has been recognized as a striking
identity badge, a force to be reckoned with, and a fashion statement
of heady proportions.
- A lock of hair is a traditional token of love.
- In Japan, wives would cut off their hair to express grief at
the death of a husband.
- African dreadlocks are supposedly high-tension cables to heaven
- named Dreads to inspire fear from enemies.
- Lead combs were once used to turn fair hair black.
